From a seven-year-old on a week-long study tour on the Gold Coast to a 75-year-old studying English in Melbourne, the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) has earned its reputation as one of the best student homestay providers in the world.
We have been bringing people together through the unique cultural experience of homestay for over 15 years. Our journey has been filled with remarkable stories and milestones. We’ve placed over 80,000 students in homes across Australia, with more than 85,000 people signing up to host with AHN.
What we've accomplished so far...
(2008-2024)
80,000 guests
AHN has placed more than 80,000
international students from 185 countries
in homestay since 2008.
World-class standards
In 2023, AHN became the first NEAS-endorsed homestay provider in Australia after completing an independent quality review.
Australia-wide host network
More than 7,500 active hosts* across Australia are part of the AHN family – one of the largest host pools in the country.
Longest homestay placement
Many students stay in homestay for 2 months to 2 years, but our record? Almost 8 years!
Hosting elite athletes
AHN was appointed an official accommodation operator for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Helping asylum seekers
AHN worked with the Australian Government to place refugees in Australian homes.
* Active hosts are those who have fully completed the application, interview/inspection, and training process. This number is dynamic as new hosts join, hosts have a break, and old hosts come back.
Our homestay hosts and students have some great things to stay about their experiences. From trying new food, going on adventures with their homestay families, improving their English and feeling safe and comfortable – our hosts and guests are happy to share their experiences.

Since 2008, the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) has grown from a team of three with a single office in Brisbane to a company with 60 employees and licensees servicing every state and territory in Australia. More than 80,000 international students have been welcomed into Australian households by the thousands of hosts who have signed on to be our homestay “ambassadors”.
More than a room to rent
The idea for AHN emerged in 2006 after a conversation over dinner about Australia’s unregulated homestay industry turned into a full-blown brainstorming session for AHN Founding Director, David Bycroft, and Managing Director of International Education Services, Chris Evason. Thousands of international students were coming to Australia to study, but there was a lack of focus for their wellbeing and the quality of service being provided when it came to accommodation. The mission was to help rebuild the industry and develop national homestay standards to ensure international students received appropriate levels of safety, quality and service.
AHN is born
AHN was formed in 2008 and since that time we have continued to work with industry bodies and the Australian Government to raise the benchmark for homestay in Australia and globally.
By mid-2009 we had placed 1,000 students in homestay, with our next major milestone coming in 2011 after reaching more than 10,000 placements. Following on from this success, the American Homestay Network was established in 2012 to adapt and introduce a U.S. version of Australia’s standards, technology and best practices to the American market. We further expanded the model into New Zealand in 2023 with the launch of New Zealand Homestay.
Our reputation as the world’s most experienced international student homestay company has also allowed us to extend our services to study tour groups and visitors to the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Our vision to facilitate personal cultural exchanges between homestay host families and their international guests has flourished. I am proud to be able to share their stories and see how AHN has had a real impact on their lives.
The AHN family
I would like to thank all the members of the AHN community who have contributed to our success.
To our team members: Your dedication and passion has enabled AHN to become one of the best student accommodation providers in the world. From getting new hosts on board to assisting students with their placement and maintaining the website, each of you has played an important part in our journey.
To our guests: Thank you for choosing AHN. I know there are many accommodation options available to international students coming to Australia and we are glad to have had a role in helping you settle in to your new life while you were here. I hope you have fantastic memories of your time with your host family and wish you well in your future endeavours.
To our hosts: AHN would not exist with you. You provide students with a home away from home, welcome them into our country and give them support when they need it most. Thank you for your ongoing commitment and showing how we can learn from one another when we embrace each other’s cultures and uniqueness.
To our partners: We appreciate the opportunity to work with you to provide students with safe, supportive and comfortable accommodation while they live and learn in Australia. I am proud AHN has been able to help you deliver a positive student experience.
Looking to the future
The number of international students in Australia reached an all-time high in 2019, with more than 756,000 students from overseas studying here. With the current shortage of rentals, purpose-built student accommodation and on-campus housing the need for properly-managed, affordable accommodation options is more important than ever before.
We are happy to see that professional homestay services are being recognised as a viable solution in many areas. AHN will continue to advocate for nationwide hosted accommodation standards such as those we helped establish in conjunction with NEAS, Study NSW and our industry partners. Our main focus is on ensuring we have enough high quality, fully vetted, and trained hosts to keep up with demand of long-term students and the influx of study tour students wanting to get a taste of what it would be like to live and study in Australia.
AHN is dedicated to being the global leader in international student homestay and we will continue to elevate the benchmark for safety, quality and service. I look forward to welcoming our next 80,000 guests to Australia and seeing the AHN family grow in the future.
