International students are coming back to Australia. Domestic students are also back on campus. But with national rental vacancies at a record low, the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) is now working with education industry stakeholders to respond to an impending student accommodation crisis.
A viable solution in the spare rooms people have in their homes.
Our Partnerships in Action
AHN has partnered with StudyPerth and the state government (to service key education providers in Western Australia) as well as The University of Western Australia (UWA) to provide hosted accommodation for students and is collaborating on host recruitment campaigns.
We are already seeing a fantastic response from the community, with more than 1,500 host applications from across Perth and regional WA since December 2022.
Hosting an international student in your home is an enriching experience that drives value within the community. As a WA homeowner, this is your chance to help an international student find their feet in a new city. – WA Education Minister, David Templeman
Our partnership with Study Gold Coast on its ‘Host for the Coast‘ scheme also sees AHN engaging with local residents who wish to become hosts to welcome international students into their home.
‘Host for the Coast’ is an initiative that invites Gold Coast homeowners to open their doors to our international students.
International students enrich the quality of our lives and have so much to offer. If you have a spare bedroom, it is a wonderful opportunity to broaden your horizons by brining the world into your home. – Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate
Working with education providers such as the University of Newcastle – who actively promote the homestay concept to their student cohort and the wider community – is also helping connect students with friendly host families.
